Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a synthetic compound derived from phenol. It is commonly used as an antioxidant in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals to prevent the formation of free radicals and oxidation. BHT is also used as a preservative in personal care products to extend the shelf life of products and maintain their quality. BHT is considered safe for use on the skin in cosmetics, but it has been linked to potential concerns such as endocrine disruption, non-reproductive organ system toxicity, irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), allergies and immunotoxicity, cancer, developmental and reproductive toxicity, and data gaps.

Unacceptable: EWG VERIFIED products cannot contain this ingredient
BHT is considered an efficacious antioxidant in feedingstuffs for all animal species. Exposure of the user to BHT via inhalation is likely; however, the Panel is not in the position to conclude on the potential inhalation toxicity of the additive. BHT is a skin and eye irritant, no conclusions can be drawn on the potential of the additive to be a skin sensitiser. In the absence of data, the FEEDAP Panel cannot conclude on the safety of BHT for the environment.
