Cocamide Mea

allergic reaction irritation

overview

Cocamide MEA is a compound synthesized from coconut oils and ethanolamine. It is used in cosmetics and personal care products as a surfactant (foam booster) and viscosity increasing agent. It is safe for use in rinse-off products and safe at concentrations up to 10% in leave-on products. It may also contain small amounts of Cocamide Diethanolamine (Cocamide DEA). Cocamide DEA is a colorless liquid used in cosmetics and personal care products such as bath oil, shampoo, conditioner, and hair dye. It is also used in some pet-care and household-cleaning products. The use of cocamide DEA has decreased in recent years.

concerns

Dermal application of Cocamide MEA at concentrations of 50% was nonirritating to only mildly irritating tests. Inhalation of Cocamide MEA in aerosol products by humans is toxic. In small doses, DEA has been known to cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, and produce mild dermatitis.

precautions

Unsafe in products left on skin and not rinsed off.

source

Cocamide MEA is derived from the fatty acids from coconut oil and monoethanolamine (MEA).

CIR

additional info

Cocamide MEA is used in a variety of personal care products, including shampoos, conditioners, body washes, and facial cleansers. Cocamide DEA is a related ingredient that has been linked to cancer in laboratory animals. The NTP study suggests that the carcinogenic response is linked to possible residual levels of DEA. The NTP study did not establish a link between DEA and the risk of cancer in humans. Cocamide MEA & DEA is most often used in opaque and syrupy cosmetic formulations such as hair dye, shampoo, body wash, dandruff treatment, liquid hand soap, cleansers, exfoliant/scrub, and bubble bath. Cola®Liquid DC-5 is a DEA-free liquid nonionic surfactant derived from triglyceride oil. Cola®Liquid DC-5 provides excellent viscosity building, foam enhancing, and foam stabilization properties. The product is liquid and very mild to eyes and skin. Cola®Liquid DC-5 can be used in any application where traditional alkanolamide surfactants have been used. Cola®Liquid DC-5 will also enhance skin feel and maintain foam levels over non-amide systems and other personal care formulations. Cola®Liquid DC-5 offers 5% maximum free DIPA for compliance with EU Cosmetic Directive Annex III regulatory requirements. Cola®Liquid DC-5 combines the best properties of Cocamide MEA and Cocamide DEA into one product. The use level for Cola®Liquid DC-5 is going to be typical of those for similar alcohol amide surfactants, generally in the range of 1% to 3% in personal care products.
