overview

Gluconolactone, a PHA (poly-hydroxy acid), is a gentle exfoliator that also hydrates the skin. It is suitable for all skin types, especially sensitive or mature skin, and offers benefits like improved skin texture and tone, hydration, antioxidant properties, and chelating properties, which means it can prevent oxidation of easily oxidised other things. It is also called as the next generation AHA.

benefits

Exfoliates the skin: Improves texture and tone, removes dead cells, and excess oil. Hydrates the skin: Attracts water to the skin, making it softer and smoother. Offers antioxidant properties: Neutralizes free radicals to combat UV damage. May have antimicrobial properties: Potential for treating acne. Chelating properties: Prevents oxidation of easily oxidised other things.

Skin suitability

concerns

In general, gluconolactone is gentle and shows little or no side effects. Although there’s no harm in taking a little extra precaution. Particularly if you’re someone who has sensitive skin or other existing skin-related issues such as eczema, psoriasis or atopic dermatitis, it’s better you test out the ingredient on a small area of your skin to check for sensitivities. If you experience more than mild inflammation, itching or burning, you must get in touch with your doctor or dermatologist.

precautions

Use with caution if you have a compromised skin condition like rosacea or atopic dermatitis. Separate from other acids or retinoids if your skin is sensitive. Pair with a moisturizer to enhance hydration.

additional info

Gluconolactone is a humectant, meaning it attracts water to the skin. It is a larger molecule, so it doesn't penetrate as deeply into the skin as other acids, making it gentler. It is comparable to AHAs in terms of benefits but less irritating. It can be used even if your skin is very sensitive, rosacea prone or if you are post cosmetic procedure. It has been shown to work successfully together and enhance the benefits of other actives, including azelaic acid for rosacea or hydroquinone for hyperpigmentation. It does not increase sun sensitivity, unlike AHAs.
