Peg 10 Dimethicone

moisturising

overview

PEG-10 Dimethicone is a type of silicone that is used in cosmetics and personal care products as a stabilizer, dispersing agent, emulsifier, and viscosity increasing agent. It helps to improve the texture and feel of skincare and cosmetic formulations and acts as a protective barrier for the skin. It is also used in hair care products as a conditioning agent, lubricant, and skin protectant.

benefits

Hydration: PEG-10 Dimethicone helps to hydrate the skin by preventing water loss. It also has an added benefit of acting as a protective barrier for the skin.

Skin suitability

All skin types except those that have an identified allergy to it.

concerns

There are concerns about the presence of 1,4-dioxane in this ingredient. This is less of a concern more recently as the process of purifying Peg-10 Dimethicone is highly regulated.

additional info

PEG-10 Dimethicone is also commonly used in hair care products. The hydrophobic portion of PEG-10 dimethicone works to make hair shiny and slippery, as well as prevents tangles. Furthermore, the water-soluble portion of this ingredient prevents product build-up, which is a common problem for other non-water soluble silicones. PEG-10 Dimethicone is also used in the product NIKKOL Nikkomulese WO, which is an emulsifier/stabilizer for W/O emulsions. It is perfect for preparation of emulsions containing large amounts of silicone/polar oils and provides stable W/O emulsions with smooth texture and remarkable spreadability. Dimethicone Copolyols belong to a class of chemicals referred to as the silicones. Silicones are resistant to chemical, physical, biological and microbiological degradation within the realm of preparation, storage, and use in cosmetics and personal care products. The safety of Dimethicone Copolyols has been assessed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel. The CIR Expert Panel evaluated the scientific data and concluded that the Dimethicone Copolyols were safe for use as cosmetic ingredients. In 2003, as part of the scheduled re-evaluation of ingredients, the CIR Expert Panel considered available new data on Dimethicone Copolyols and reaffirmed the above conclusion.
