Polybutene

exfoliating moisturising

overview

Polybutene is a synthetic polymer derived from petroleum. It is commonly used in cosmetics and skincare products as a binding, glossing, and thickening agent. Polybutene is generally considered safe for use in cosmetics, as it is non-sensitizing, non-comedogenic, and does not penetrate the outer layer of the skin. It is also a rich, non-drying emollient that adds a gorgeous, cushiony richness to lip formulations, making them feel more expensive and substantial.

benefits

Holds ingredients together: Polybutene acts as a binding agent, allowing the cohesion of different cosmetic ingredients within a single formula. Increases viscosity: Polybutene functions as a non-aqueous thickening agent, meaning it thickens formulas by targeting oils rather than water. Softens and smoothes skin: Polybutene acts as an emollient when used in moisturizers, increasing the thickness of lipids. Can act as an epilating agent: Polybutene's naturally sticky consistency makes it useful for removing unwanted hair. Adds shine and gloss: Polybutene's thickening properties make it a great ingredient for adding shine and gloss to cosmetic products. Provides a rich, cushiony feel to lip formulations, making them feel more expensive and substantial.

Skin suitability

Polybutene is generally safe for most skin types, including sensitive skin.

additional info

Polybutene is used in cosmetics and personal care products as a binder, epilating agent, and viscosity increasing agent. It is also used in hair care products to provide tackiness, thickness, gloss, and spreadability. Polybutene is a low hazard ingredient with low incidents of skin, eye and lung irritation. Polybutene is any one of several polymers of isobutene and n-butene that vary according to the degree of polymerization. Synthetic polymers are large molecules prepared from relatively small chemical compounds called monomers. If only one monomer is used in the synthesis, the resulting polymer is a homopolymer. Polybutene is a rich, non-drying emollient that is a fantastic lubricant and gloss-boosting ingredient. It’s vegan, stable, crystal clear, and doesn’t smell like anything. Polybutene adds gorgeous, cushiony richness to lip formulations, making them feel more expensive and substantial. Polybutene is really thick, slow-moving, and sticky, so be patient and be careful! This ingredient can be hot or cold processed, though the data sheet from TKB recommends not heating it, and keeping it below 120°C if you do. It’s oil soluble, so whatever you’re making needs an oil phase. Stored somewhere cool, dark, and dry, polybutene should last at least 3 years. Mix polybutene with a liquid oil you love to create a rich, shiny, long-wearing lip oil! You can find polybutene in popular formulations like Pat McGrath Labs lipsticks, Tower 28 Beauty Jelly Lip Glosses, Sephora Lip Gloss, Jaclyn Hill’s Lip Oil, and Essence Cosmetic’s Lip Oil.
