Tetrasodium Edta

irritation

overview

Tetrasodium EDTA is a chelating agent used in cosmetics to bind metals and prevent them from reacting negatively with other ingredients. It helps soaps and lotions lather better and foam properly. It also prevents the growth of fungi and mold, protects fragrances, and works well in hard water. However, it is made from known carcinogens, formaldehyde, and sodium cyanide, and can irritate the skin and eyes. It also increases the penetrability of the natural skin barrier and allows deeper penetration by other ingredients.

precautions

Those with sensitive skin should avoid using products containing tetrasodium EDTA. Formulators should be careful when combining Tetrasodium EDTA with other ingredients that may be hazardous if absorbed.

source

Made from sodium cyanide and formaldehyde.

CIR

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel evaluated the scientific data and concluded that disodium ETDA and related ingredients (including tetrasodium EDTA) were safe as used in cosmetic ingredients and personal skin care products.

EWG

The Cosmetic Safety Database rates the hazard of the ingredient at a low “2,” with a low overall health hazard, and EDTA has not been found to cause cancer in laboratory animals.

additional info

Tetrasodium EDTA is also known as TEA-EDTA, tetrasodium salt, edetate sodium, and tetrasodium edetate. It is used in personal care and hygiene products, soaps, lotions, cosmetics, hair dyes and bleaches, shampoos, conditioners, and bath soaps. Tetrasodium EDTA is recommended for alkaline products, like most handcrafted soap. It can also be used in creams, lotions and surfactant systems. EDTA and its salts are substituted diamines. HEDTA (hydroxyethyl ethylenediamine triacetic acid) and Trisodium HEDTA are substituted amines. All of these ingredients function as chelating agents in cosmetics and personal care products.
